A French medical practitioner, Alfred Tomatis, started researching the source of hearing problems in his patients fifty years after Alexander’s pioneering work. His research has led to a slew of groundbreaking new findings regarding the ear’s previously undiscovered functions and the therapeutic benefits of sound. He also devised a technique for improving listening abilities.

Alexander and Tomatis were both originally concerned with increasing sound quality, one in terms of production and the other in terms of reception. Both the Alexander Technique and the Tomatis Method are now acknowledged as having a broad variety of positive benefits – physical, mental, and even spiritual – that go well beyond their creators’ initial purpose.

His technique is a sensory stimulation programme in which the patient wears headphones and listens to artificially manipulated and filtered sounds. Sound is moulded and delivered to the ears in quickly changing shapes thanks to filters, amplifiers, and a complex gating system.
