Many of the items on your tax planning checklist are based on your individual and business tax circumstances. However, there are a few things you’ll need to make the process run as smoothly as possible. While the following tax planning checklist isn’t intended to be detailed, it does include many of the most common items and documents you’ll need to carry to your tax appointment.
Checklist for Tax Preparation:
Bring your Social Security card as well as your driver’s licence with you. You’ll need this to check your identity unless you’re using the same tax accountant as last year.
In your tax planning checklist, don’t forget to include a copy of last year’s state and federal tax returns. Your tax manager will be able to determine this year’s tax return more quickly using the details from last year’s returns.
Unless you’re self-employed, the employer will give you a Form W-2, Salary and Tax Statement. Employers must submit the W-2 form by January 31. Make a note on your tax planning checklist that you need to call to inform them to give it to you before your tax appointment if you haven’t received it by February.
Please bring all of your 1099 forms with you. All of the various types of 1099s can be explained by the tax accountant, but in general, these forms disclose income other than salaries and tips. They’re often used to disclose payments to independent contractors.
