Error 0x80070426 – Microsoft Security Essentials

80070426One of the possible causes of the Error 0x80070426 is Microsoft Security Essentials. It causes an error when an update is made to your old Windows version to Windows 10.

The old version of Windows uses Microsoft Security Essentials which acts as onboard antivirus and spyware protection. Windows 10 uses Windows Defender. Once the update is made Microsoft Security Essentials is removed and replaced with Windows Defender. On some cases, the update fails to remove Microsoft Security Essentials which causes issues. These two programs have the same function but can’t exist on the same computer.

In order to fix this, you can try this method.

  1. Press the Windows Key and R button. The run dialog box will appear.
  2. Enter taskmgr in the text box.
  3. Find WinDefend on the Services tab of the Task Manager window.
  4. Right click on the WinDefend and click Stop.

You now need to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials.  To uninstall it follow this instruction.

  1. Press the Windows Key and R button. The run dialog box will appear.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Find Microsoft Essentials and uninstall the program.

Congratulations you have done it. But remember what we did with Windows Defender? We stopped it in order for us to uninstall Microsoft Essentials. This means that your computer is now vulnerable to virus and spyware. For Windows Defender to run again, you will need to restart the computer. After that, the error 0x80070426 should have disappeared.
